ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS

SWALLOWED

  The material can produce chemical burns within the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract following ingestion.  Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments. If swallowed,  the liquid can produce stomach upset, nausea, pain and vomiting. Vomit entering the lungs may cause chemical pneumonitis (inflammation of lungs) can follow which can cause death.  

EYE

  There is some evidence to suggest that this material can causeeye irritation and damage in some persons.  The material can produce chemical burns to the eye following direct contact. Vapors or mists may be extremely irritating.  There is evidence that material may produce eye irritation in some persons and produce eye damage 24 hours or more after instillation. Severe inflammation may be expected with pain. There may be damage to the cornea. Unless treatment is prompt and adequate there may be permanent loss of vision. Conjunctivitis can occur following repeated exposure.  

SKIN

  This material can cause inflammation of the skin oncontact in some persons.  The material can produce chemical burns following direct contactwith the skin.  Entry into the blood-stream, through, for example, cuts, abrasions or lesions, may produce systemic injury with harmful effects. Examine the skin prior to the use of the material and ensure that any external damage is suitably protected.  The material may cause severe skin irritation after prolonged or repeated exposure and may produce on contact skin redness, swelling, the production of vesicles, scaling and thickening of the skin. Repeated exposures may produce severe ulceration.  

INHALED

  Inhalation may produce health damage*.  The material has NOT been classified as "harmful by inhalation" nor has it been designated as "irritating to the respiratory system". This is because of the lack of corroborating animal or human evidence. In the absence of such evidence, care should be taken nevertheless to ensure exposure is kept to a minimum and that suitable control measures be used, in an occupational setting to control vapors, fumes and aerosols.  Acute effects from inhalation of high vapor concentrations may be chest and nasal irritation with coughing, sneezing, headache and even nausea.  High concentrations cause inflamed airways and watery swellingof the lungs with edema.  

CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS

  Principal routes of exposure are by accidental skin and eye contact and by inhalation of vapors especially at higher temperatures.  Skin contact with tannic acid causes blackening of the skin which does not  wash away but disappears after some days. The product may burn eye tissue.  Inhalation overexposure causes dizziness, anaesthesia and may cause  headache, nausea, vomiting and possible kidney and brain damage.  Ingestion causes a strong burning sensation, may cause vomiting, drowsiness,  pulmonary damage, respiratory failure and possibly heart collapse.  CAUTION:  Tannic acid and isopropanol have been classified by IARC as Group 3  - not classifiable as to their carcinogenicity to humans. Use good  occupational hygiene practices to limit all personal contact.  [RTECS 1989]
